Scotland’s gateway to the Nordic nations?

Orkney’s strategic location as a gateway to Scotland for the Nordic region will be the focus of an event at the Scottish Parliament next Wednesday evening.

Possible Orkney, an event organised by Nordic Horizons, is sponsored by Mike Mackenzie, SNP MSP for the Highlands and Islands.

Mr Mackenzie said: “As a regular visitor to Orkney, the idea of the islands as a gateway into this country for the Nordic nations is an intriguing one, and I am pleased to be helping to host what I anticipate will be a very stimulating event at Holyrood.”

Nordic Horizons is an informal group of Scottish professionals who want to raise the standard of knowledge and debate about life and policy in the Nordic nations. The group suggests Orkney could be the “jumping off point” for a Nordic Scotland.

Organisers say they aim to show what they believe the future holds for Scotland if links are strengthened with the Nordic region. Their intention is to open up discussions with as many people as possible, and Possible Orkney is seen as a kick-starter for that.
