Ferry company plans support for isles farmers
Orkney Ferries is putting contingency plans in place for the bulk shipment of animal forage and fodder if required by farmers in the North and South Isles.
This is in response to the problems the unseasonal weather conditions have created over the spring and early summer.
Orkney Ferries chairmain, Councillor Graham Sinclair, said: “We are aware of the difficult situation facing farmers, with shortages of animal forage and fodder resulting in the need to import supplies from the mainland of Scotland.
“We are making contingency plans to ensure that, if required, additional bulk loads can be shipped to the isles during the busy summer season. The company will offer the best tariff it can to make this as affordable as possible.
“In addition, the need for a longer-term plan for the back end of the year is also recognised and is being considered in case it is required.”
Some supplies have already been shipped and the company is currently looking at the logistics of how best to carry further deliveries if needed. Customers affected by this current situation should contact Orkney Ferries for further details.
