Volleyball, running, football, darts and motocross all set to feature on jam-packed weekend of sport
Orkney Rugby Club’s men and women sides face two pivotal fixtures this weekend, as the county looks ahead to a busy weekend of sport.
The county’s First XV men’s side know a win would all but seal survival in BT National League Division 3 as they host Perthshire.
Having seen an upturn in form in recent weeks, the side will be desperate for a bonus-point win.
Orkney are two points ahead of their relegation rivals going into the match as they attempt to prolong their three-year stay in the national leagues.
It is an early kick-off on Saturday, with the action set to start at 11am.
Following the men’s game, it’s the turn of the women for another crucial fixture.
A point would see the Orkney Dragons crowned champions of the BT Women’s North League as they host Shetland in their final match of the season.
The Dragons are unbeaten at home this year and will be determined to end their second season in the league on a high.
That match is set to get underway at 2pm.
While the rugby is going on outside Picky, inter-county volleyball will be going on inside.
Shetland visit the county, with three games — the men’s, women’s and mixed — set to go ahead on a packed day of volleyball.
The men’s game is first up, starting at 11am in the arena, followed by the women’s game at 1pm.
The mixed match will round off the action, starting at 3pm, with the presentations following afterwards.
The county will also play host to the first official Parkrun on Saturday morning, an event which is sure to attract a multitude of runners.
The run is set to take place at 9.30am and will see the runners run around the Peedie Sea area, with warm-up at 9.15am.
The summer football season is starting to get underway, and this Saturday will see three Highland Amateur Cup ties.
Firth play Rovers at the Stromness Academy 3G at 3pm, while two ties kick-off at 3.30pm — Stromness take on Shetland side Whitedale at the KGS 3G, while Thorfinn travel to Dounby to take on Dounby.
Elsewhere, a group of Kirkwall darts players are also preparing for a huge fixture, as they take on Shetland tonight.
KDDL Orkney are aiming for eight-titles-in-a-row, after matching the seven-victories-in-a-row set by Shetland in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The match is set to begin at 7pm in the Lerwick Legion, with the Anniversary Shield played on Saturday afternoon.
Finally, there will also be motocross action on Sunday, at Northfield, Burray.
