Ministers can’t wash their hands of possible ferry strike disruption, say MSPs
The MSPs for the Northern Isles have hit out at the Scottish Government over the threat of industrial action on the Serco NorthLink ferry services.
Speaking after questioning the First Minister in the Scottish Parliament, yesterday, Shetland MSP Tavish Scott said: “We need to avoid any potential for strike disruption to our lifeline ferry services. I want the Scottish Government to accept their responsibilities for the Northern Isles ferry contract and work to have any threat to ferry services lifted.
“It is unacceptable that the islands could be held to ransom while the Scottish Government, the union and Serco are in a protracted fight. Disrupting ferry services impacts on every part of Shetland’s economy. It is Alex Salmond’s job to sort that out and without delay.”
Orkney MSP Liam McArthur added that it was imperative that the lifeline ferry routes are not disrupted by strike action in the run up to Christmas.
He said: “I would urge Serco and union representatives to resolve any ongoing dispute in the coming days so that this threat can be lifted as soon as possible. But given their role in specifying and agreeing the current Northern Isles ferry contract, ministers cannot simply wash their hands of this issue.”
